If the views of the well-known Soviet dissident Vladimir Bukovsky, and quite a few others, are anything to go by, this apparently unfortunate juxtaposition may be actually a rather frightening Freudian slip. It seems that not only are the front-line police in Europol armed with both guns and diplomatic immunity, but, perhaps presciently, they operate from an old Gestapo HQ in Geneva!
Would it be too much to think that someone in authority might consider this to be a less than sensitive decision given the history of earlier Continental attempts to ‘unite Europe’, and the concerns of a populus that is becoming increasingly alarmed at the lack of democratic accountability in the EU? Or are they so certain of their inviolable power over the peasants that they simply do not care what the latter think? “I see no reason why the people should have any say in the construction of the EU” – said some forgettable, but worryingly powerful appointed EU oligarch.
It is extremely difficult for an ordinary prole to be certain of anything to do with the EU as it is such a secretive organisation, adept at mocking those who criticise it: “Don’t be silly, we wouldn’t do anything like that, you’re just being xenophobic”.
Of course, when one realises that ‘xenophobia’ is a crime in the EU, along with ‘racism’ and lots of other deliberately vague notions that the EU can pretty much define any way it wants, and that criticism of said EU has been ruled by its ‘Supreme Court’ to be not only illegal but akin to blasphemy, and their new rule of law (Corpus Juris) removes the presumption of innocence and the right to a trial, and their State Police can pursue you anywhere at any time for such ‘crimes’, then cart you off to languish in prison somewhere on the Continent indefinitely, and the Lisbon Treaty has removed all the outstanding impediments to the power of its unelected, unaccountable bosses, the fact that said Police Force operates from an old Gestapo HQ seems somehow less funny than perhaps it should.
There is a paradox, though. The very notion that the noble EU could have a police force similar to the Gestapo (or Stasi, as Bukovsky warned) seems, even to a critic, somewhat unlikely. It is easy for the EU to mock those who fear it: “Don’t be silly, we wouldn’t do anything like that, you’re just being xenophobic” (see previous paragraph). “But maybe Bukovsky’s intuitive understanding of how bad things can get, despite his obvious inaccuracies, is better informed than all the historical analysts quoted here believe”.
The EU oppresses with obfuscation, not with terror. It knows that torture inevitably foments determined rebellion, whereas incomprehensible bureaucracy just grinds the people down until, like rabbits in a spotlight, they sit helpless, awaiting the bureaucratic bullet.
The EU doesn’t invent thousands of stupid laws carrying 5 year prison sentences because it cares about the curvature of bananas. It does so because:
“There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.”~ Ayn Rand
If they cannot get you for criticising the EU they will jail you for parking with your shoelaces undone. And you can’t sack them. Lawmakers who cannot be sacked are dictators. For all its pompous, sanctimonious posturing, that is the unpleasant truth of the EU.
